The streets of Miami have been known to make or break rap artist through the release of MixTapes. What started as a way for DJs to gain popularity, today's Hip Hop Industry is now using mixtapes as a means to sort of "test the waters".
Now instead of DJ's soliciting rappers to feature on their mixtapes, Indie Labels are releasing mixtapes and soliciting DJs to host their project. Some DJs are paid to Host mixtapes, while others are often affiliated in some way with the indie label.
Mixtapes, or "Street Albums" as they are often called are truly flooding the streets of Miami.
The streets of Miami can't wait to hear of the release of the new Rick Ross or Trick Daddy Mixtape. They hang on to their every word, hoping to hear a subtle jab, some Miami slang, or anything that reminds them that these rappers are reppin the 305. Often times these Street Albums are more popular than these Rapper's Commercially Released Album. Artist such as Plies tend to show his "street edge" in his mixtapes, while keeping it strictly for the ladies with this albums.
Other locals like Iceburg of the DunkRyders, or PM formally of Iconz are often feared to be MixTape Wonders. Never releasing a commercial album, as they are unable to commercialize their street music.
