Online Music Publishing Class with a Published Songwriter

Learn in an accredited Online Class about the Business of Songwriting from a Published Songwriter! Register early! Don’t be left out! Enrollment starts December 1st for current students and December 8th for new students!

“Applied Songwriting” class, MUS 59, will be offered Online starting January 5th by Foothill College (www.foothill.edu). There are no prerequisites. You don’t need to know how to read or write music notation and you don’t need to know music theory.

The focus of the class is on the business of songwriting along with some creative songwriting. Some of the topics we’ll cover will include: What does a Publisher do? How to find a Publisher? How are royalties generated? The Pluses and Minuses of Self Publishing. What do ASCAP, BMI and SESAC do? How will this be affected by New Media? Etc.

You can register for Winter Quarter at www.foothill.edu/reg/index.php starting December 1st for current Foothill students and starting December 8th for incoming or former Foothill students.

The class is being taught by Published Songwriter, Jim Bruno (see bio below).

Instructor’s Background –

Jim Bruno is a San Francisco Bay Area based published songwriter.

Songs he’s written have been recorded and released by Shawn Colvin, Mary Lou Lord, Cliff Eberhardt and Laurie MacAlister. Songs he’s co-written have been recorded and released by Chuck Prophet and Thad Cockrell

As a performing songwriter he has performed with or opened shows for the following artists: Shawn Colvin, John Gorka, Charlie Musselwhite, Joe Ely, Greg Brown, Mary Lou Lord, Steve Forbert, Bill Morrissey, Big Twist, and Cliff Eberhardt. He’s performed at the Greenwich Village Folk Festival, the Udine Folk Festival in Udine, Italy and has toured five times in Europe. He also played bass, guitar and sang in the Shawn Colvin Band for a number of years and often performed with Shawn as a duet. He recently released his own album of all original songs called ‘Alright Alright’.

He’s negotiated and signed numerous song publishing agreements. Among others these publishers include Bug Music and the Welk Music Group in Los Angeles, and Largo Music in New York. In addition to his having his own publishing company, Jimmy Bruno Music, as a songwriter he currently has a music publishing agreement with Universal Music Group. He is an affiliated Publisher and Songwriter with BMI and the Harry Fox Agency. He’s also a grammy voting member of the Recording Academy.
