Album launch for
Richard Durrant –
‘Recuerdos’ Guitar Classics

Maverick guitar virtuoso Richard Durrant will play an all-classical programme on a revolutionary new guitar at a fringe theatre in London on September 19th. Durrant, who recently appeared to a packed Royal Albert Hall, has chosen the Pleasance in Islington as the ideal place to launch his new solo album recorded on his signature instrument, The Richard Durrant Concert Guitar, by Gary Hearn. The radical design, created by Gary Hearn from St Albans, has already attracted ecstatic reviews from the guitar press – many claim this instrument has expanded the capabilities of the classical guitar.

Durrant’s first classical album for seven years is a response to requests from fans. It will be released his own LongMan Records – a thriving indie, acoustic label that can be read as a musical map of Durrant’s adventures over the past 15 years including albums by diverse acts such as the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, King of the Buskers Don Partridge and a collection of talented singer songwriters. Now it’s time for Durrant himself to take centre stage – and not before time, according to many.

The content of the album is drawn from the most popular classical guitar pieces Durrant plays. This includes the iconic works Asturias (Albeniz), Recuerdos de la Alhambra & Capricho Arabe (Tarrega) and Stanley Myers’ Cavatina. They’ve all been recorded before many times, but not on such an instrument and not in surround sound. The recording will be produced by the guitarist and legendary teacher Charles Ramirez - Durrant’s mentor from his days at the Royal College of Music.

Durrant, now in his forties, is playing more solo concerts than at any other time in his life. He says: “I feel a renewed hunger to dig as much beauty and expression from this wooden box as I possibly can and to let my audiences glimpse the passion in the music I’ve chosen for this recording”.

The launch gig will showcase the album as well as highlights from Durrant’s successful Guitar Whisperer show. “The Pleasance is the ideal venue for this event”, says Durrant “Its an intimate and creative black box space with a surprisingly good acoustic for a converted London bus factory! In this relaxed, non-classical venue, people will have the chance to judge for themselves the effect that Gary’s extraordinary instrument is going to have on the way we hear and enjoy the classical way we hear and enjoy the classical guitar repertoire.”

You are invited to attend the launch of ‘RECUERDOS’ GUITAR CLASSICS on 19 SEPTEMBER at the PLEASANCE THEATRE, ISLINGTON, LONDON.
