SecondWaveMusic.com is Chicago area’s new destination
for unsigned artists and their fans

New site connects acts with listeners and
offers business advice to emerging artists

CHICAGO – Oct. 3, 2007 – Unsigned Chicago-area musicians and their fans have a new online destination. Second Wave Music, a next-generation music company, today launched SecondWaveMusic.com a site where music fans can discover unsigned artists and artists can raise their profiles and get helpful music business advice from contributing experts.
Second Wave Music developed the free Web site in response to unmet needs of the Chicago-area music scene. It will provide a central hub for fans to find undiscovered musicians and concert dates, interact with local musicians and connect with other fans, and for artists to reach new fans and get basic advice on important music business topics—such as publishing, contracts and management—before they spend a significant amount of money with professional advisors.

“Second Wave Music offers a full range of artist services including those provided by traditional management companies, record labels and publishing companies. We’ll work with the artist to fill in the blanks. SecondWaveMusic.com is our first offering and represents a first-of-its-kind Web site for Chicago,” said Steve Johns, co-founder of Second Wave Music. “The city’s music community is filled with incredible talent, but until now, there hasn’t been a single place online that brings them all together for fans or labels to discover. With this site, we’re helping to raise the profile of these emerging, unsigned artists. We hope to help them achieve their goals, whether that means getting discovered and signed by a label or simply making a living doing what they love—making music.”

Content for Fans

For music fans, the Web site includes an artist directory with profiles that include artist descriptions, photos, links to MySpace pages or other Web sites, songs, videos and information about their upcoming shows. Other content includes local music news, CDs and concert reviews, local music venue information and an event calendar.

The artists profiled at SecondWaveMusic.com are identified through Web site feedback from bands and fans, and by Rachel Komar, Second Wave Music’s co-founder and director of operations. A musician herself, Komar has been helping local and national artists with marketing and promotion for many years.

“Once fans connect with a new artist online, the next stage of discovery is seeing them live. We’ve put the tools together in one place for fans to find out where to go see them, listen to song samples before deciding to go see a band, see what other artists are playing the same venue and hear what other fans have to say about the local music community. This information is available in different places online, but SecondWaveMusic.com brings it all together, and Chicago is just the start. We hope to expand to additional cities in the future,” said Johns.

Content for Artists

Content tailored to artists includes the Web site’s Music 101 section, which has useful advice and insight into the music business, including legal issues, management, touring, publishing and more. This content is provided by recognized industry experts, fellow artists and leaders in the music business. Additionally, artists can use the site to build new relationships with other artists for shows and other promotional opportunities.

Live, in-studio performances recorded exclusively for SecondWaveMusic.com by JBTV Studios in Chicago can be used as a “virtual A&R” studio to reach out-of-town record labels.

Welcomed by Area Artists and Music Executives

“We’ve already received great feedback on the live, in-studio performance we made for SecondWaveMusic.com,” said Marc Walloch, lead guitar player for Company of Thieves, a local emerging band. “The Music 101 section deals with issues emerging, unsigned bands like us face every day. It’s also a great introduction to the right people in the business.”

“SecondWaveMusic.com is a great addition to the tools that emerging music creators need to be successful,” said Shawn Murphy, representative of the Chicago office of The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. “I welcome them to the Chicago music community and look forward to working with them to help educate and connect unsigned artists.”

The site also includes live, in-studio performances of unsigned artists recorded by Jerry Bryant, owner and on-air personality of JBTV, a Chicagoland television program that showcases the best in alternative, independent and local music.

“I’ve been promoting undiscovered Chicago bands on my television show and Web site for more than 20 years, and I’m excited to help further promote these exciting local unsigned artists,” said Bryant.
