CD REVIEW: The Villas - Secrets
By Ben Ohmart - 05/21/2007 - 10:34 AM EDT

Artist: The Villas
Genre: Pop/Rock
CD Review:
'Just Like a Genius' not only begins the short adventure, but it fakes you out by beginning: 'Burroughs in the air / That's how you do it, as if I care / as if I need to know. / just like a genius, if you say so / nodding off remembering your scissors for the trip / take a poke of wonder mint one stick before you snip'.

The guitars and drums explode somewhere in there. But don't let the surreal feel of the lyrics turn you to the wrong painting. This is, well, let's read the back of the cd where Chris Carter says 'the Raspberries meet Elvis Costello on Abbey Road'. He's right there. Bill Villa (no relation to the guy who builds houses) sounds a bit like Elvis C., dragging his words carelessly around with him like a lump of old clothes that are secretly, hugely valuable. The cd's short, but meantime there's some fine guitar work and carefully constructed pop-rock moving up and down.
