CD Review:
West Chester, Pennsylvania 5 piece - Spotted Atrocious releases their 2009 EP entitled Temporary Fix. The EP logs in at just over 17 minutes. From what I gather this is the debut release from the quintet. Overall Internet presence for the band is below average as they are obviously new to the scene.
The EP kicks things off with “Temporary Fix": a hooky, mid-tempo acoustic rock piece that makes a good first impression. Right from the start this upbeat modern day version of The Monkeys delivers catchy melodies, creative lyrical content, and strong originality. Track 2: "Blow it out your Ass" is probably my favorite track on the EP. It takes a radical left turn musically towards the end, delivering an incredible keyboard solo reminiscent of 70’s psychogenic punk at the end. The keyboard touches definitely add a nice touch to music. Track 4: "A Beast most Ferocious" downshifts a bit. Here you get a real glimpse of what vocalist Ryan Warfield is capable of. His vocal melodies, and harmonies are well crafted, well placed, and extremely creative. His vocals are warm, captivating, and go down clean. I might add he takes some impressive vocal risks throughout the EP as well. This band is having a lot of fun with it, as evident by their live clips, and upbeat songs like “Temporary Fix” & "Drop Drop." But their slower songs like "A Beast most Ferocious", and "I left the Earth 3 Times” reveal a deeper, more emotional side to Ryan Warfield and the band.
The overall mix of this EP is not what I’d call legendary. It has all the trademarks of a mid nineties musical production (mix to master). At times the overall mix lacks true dynamic, depth, and bottom end feel. As a result some of the songs sound a bit flat, and one sided. In 2009 the bar is set high for artists like Spotted Atrocious. However I will add that because the songs themselves are so well crafted, this issue is goes virtually un-noticeable. As a listener I felt entertained the entire time.
Overall this is a good start by Spotted Atrocious. They are a fun band to listen to, and no doubt a blast to check out live. They give off the typical fun, carefree “sing songy” vibe reminiscent of bands like the The White Stripes, Panic at the Disco, and Death Cab for Cutie. Each song is well crafted, and the EP as a whole possess a lot of musical variety. The strong suit of this band is clearly front man Ryan Warfield. He clearly has the look, the mojo, and the sex appeal (vocals to visuals) needed to make him the premier talent within the band. Spotted Atrocious has a lot of potential. If this band does all the tight things over the next few years, there is no doubt they will provide more than just a temporary fix. I look forward to hearing their full length CD soon.
