CD Review: Los Angeles based Contemporary Pop Artist Margo Rey just released her latest 3 song musical teaser entitled This Holiday Night (2012). Margo Rey is no stranger to the Music Business. Audiences have truly embraced this original sound from Margo that has been made evident with the release of her 2 singles charting the billboard with “Between Us” (#21), and “Let it Rain” (#17).

The EP takes flight with “This Holiday Night” an inviting intro groove that serves up hooky vocal groove against melodic guitar ambience well placed vocal accents and harmonies from Rey. Track 2 “Toyland” keeps thing moving in the smooth direction with its catchy vocal vibe, impressive jazzy groove painted against impressive melodic accents that flow and ebb it’s way through to emotional fruition. The production quality is world class and the musicianship of everyone involved is above the bar. Along the way you will notice lush instrumentation with things like impressive guitar accents, piano, keyboard accents, strings, slide guitar, lush harmonies layered everywhere. The rhythm section pushes the natural accents well and deliver much in the way of low end frequency and high end clarity. What I like the most about this band is how well they seem to groove together. Now turning our attention over to Rey - as for her vocal abilities it works extremely well within the confines of this festive Christmas catalog. Her falsetto is to die for. I suspect some of her vocal influences are – Jewel, Nora Jones, Celine Dion and even Gloria Estefan just to name a few. But honestly Rey is a vocalist that transcends at the stereotypical pigeonholing. What I like about her voice the slight vulnerability and innocence she gives off - but with touches of wisdom throughout. Her vocal delivery is pure, sincere and cannot be faked. I might add she takes some impressive vocal risks along the way indicating to me a strong and confident vocal ability. This EP from Rey delivers 3 compelling tracks all is providing an interesting snapshot of music that delivers thought provoking wisdom with messages that are uplifting, pure, and positive. The EP ends with Track 3 Silent Night” the perfect finale statements for an EP like this.

I typically deduct 1 star for EP releases. The full length release is a more complete snapshot to judge an artist by. It’s fair to say this EP is a bit short. Perhaps 2 more songs would really hit it out of the park.

From start to finish “This Holiday Night” is an impressive snapshot of music from Magro Rey. The music is highly passionate, uplifting and extremely entertaining. All songs are consistent musical experiences, each one possessing a unique personality, flair and signature groove. Note for note, song for song this catalog is rock solid and extremely consistent. The writing and playing abilities of Margo Rey and her band are rock solid, the melodies and harmonies are well crafted and the vocal presence and overall entertainment persona of Margo Rey are to die for.
