CD Review:
Mike Kovacevich offers his debut album ‘Peel back the Sun’, sprinkled with alternative pop/rock sound of layered chiming guitars and pop melodies. Though Mike provides an intelligent production work here, especially considering the home based fabrication; listeners are bound to get weary of its raw and amateurish vocals on constant listening. Deliberate lengthy vocals somewhere between that of ‘croak in the throat’ Dave Mathews and Michael Stipe, they ran miles ahead before any point to elaborate. Mike has provided a lot of the constructive energy in his marvelous groovy sound with near perfect melodies.
‘Peel back the Sun’ is a nice album, especially considering the one man effort for a genre close to adult alternative. There’s a sense of maturity in compositions that run down each song that appeals to a refined audience yet not distancing from rock sensibilities. Mike’s work here is not the abstract receptivity of avant-garde or artsy rock and the beauty lies in its being closer to mainstream music.
This is not a perfect album yet Mike display a fair amount of talent here. Few mentionable songs on this listing are Bean, Maybe and Battle. There are many musical influences that churned this catch-all product and there should be more coming from Mike on similar lines.
