CD Review:

Esoebo is the collaboration of Atlanta musicians, Chuck McDowell and Gail Burnett, and stands for Eclectic Selections of Everything But Opera. It certainly lives up to its name. Ranging from covers of the Fats Waller tune, Ainít Misbehaviní to the traditional This Little Light of Mine, Chuck and Gail tackle it all with aplomb and grace.

Chuck plays acoustic guitar and sings lead on most songs. Gail provides silky cello and perfect harmonies while sometimes grabbing a lead herself. Theyíre joined by Jonathon Cullifer on steel guitar, Scott Ehly on sax and trombone, Wade Williams on upright bass, Kirk Sarkasisian. Producer Robert McDowell adds some background vocals.

There are some great covers on Esoebo such as The Long Way Home, Come To Jesus, and one of my favorites, Broken Things but itís two originals that really caught my ear. Chuckís song, The Ballad of Never Was is a beautiful, well written song that really stands out. Flow, an instrumental by Gail Burnett, touched me like few songs ever have.

Esoebo is a strong first release by two skilled musicians. Iím looking forward to hearing more.
