Artist: David Brookings
Album: Obsessed

Overall Talent Level: 9/10
Songwriting Skills: 9/10
Best Songs: I'm Not Afraid, Obsessed, McKinley Gail
CD Review: I can’t help but get a Rooney vibe when I listen to David Brookings. The song structures and vocal arrangements also bring to mind classic 60’s bands like The Monkees and The Zombies.

I’m Not Afraid has an infectious sing-along chorus that is doubled by the guitar. Get Behind Me reminded me of everything that I like about the Beach Boys. Obsessed is an acoustic ballad that could be autobiographical which makes it even more interesting (“You gotta be strong/ Or you’re never gonna make it big/ I stare at the sun and you think I get depressed/ Not at all I’m just obsessed“). Note to the listener: it’s lyrics are the only lyrics printed in the CD booklet.

What’s Wrong With Nikki? must be a lost track from the Pet Sounds sessions. The harmonized vocals, chord changes, and simple but meaningful lyrics would make even Brian Wilson proud.

I also enjoyed The Festival. It has a garage rock groove that is augmented by some short vocal/guitar fills that bring the whole vibe together.

One of my favorite tunes has to be McKinley Gail. It is another acoustic story-song that makes a great closer to the album. With childlike lyrics and an innocent arrangement, it leaves the listener wanting more. So hit repeat…
