CD Review:

Blue Rabbit is an unusual band in today's pop world. The brainchild of Heather Anderson, Blue Rabbit's lineup includes Anderson on vocals and guitar with Lucretia Daley on vocals and keys. Amanda Guilbeaux adds vocals with Eah Herren on Celtic harp and Dr. Freia Funke on cello. Arami Reyes and Sarah Rocklin add vocals while Kevin Weber rounds out the ensemble on drums and percussion. Anderson penned all the songs. Their unique sound is amply demonstrated on their new release, Separate.

The hallmark sound of Blue Rabbit is tight vocal arrangements and fresh songwriting supported by a very talented and unique cast of musicians. The first song, Sleep, is paced by the steady throb of Funke's cello hits against Weber's percussion. The rich layered vocals are a perfect contrast. Getting Away is a deliciously clever arrangement. My favorite cut is Like I'd Like You To. Anderson's songwriting is top notch and the band rocks. Missing Piece is Anderson's take on the pain of breaking up. Co-produced by Anderson and Weber, Separate delivers the goods.

Blue Rabbit's fresh appealing sound is best illustrated by this experience. I gave the CD to my 17 year old daughter after I'd listened and liked it. I spent the next two weeks trying to get it back from her to write this review. Separate is an interesting and inventive effort from an interesting and inventive band. It manages to be pop friendly and yet stand apart from rest. Separate is a smart, daring release featuring lavish harmonies and excellent production. It's definitely worth checking out.
