CD REVIEW: Bethany Reynolds - Shooting Star
By Ben Ohmart - 05/21/2007 - 10:34 AM EDT

Artist: Bethany Reynolds
Genre: Country
CD Review:
This is good stuff. Very good. A voice that reminds me a bit of Dolly Parton, and songwriting skill that is just this side of super. I HOPE to hell she's got a few cuts by country artists already, otherwise, I will have lost my faith in the music biz completely. Do you, Bethany?

'Empty Hangers' is great. Just great. Poetic - like all good country songs - and inflicting a mood that you just can't walk away from. You'll keep a little bit of it in your heart after you've heard it.

The clever twists of 'Couch Potato' deem this something smart. Along the lines of Ray Stevens, I think, even to the point of the orchestration. Funny stuff that's a nice break between ballads.

Speaking of music, these are catchy tunes. Coming back to hoping she has cuts by other artists, these are the kind of songs everyone keeps saying you should write. They stick in your head immediately. After 1 listen. It's hard for a songwriter to judge his own songs, since you have to listen to them a hell of a lot more than 1 time before they're written and recorded! But I judge hers as tunes that stay with you. A nice feat.

Production is good, singing is good, songwriting is great. I applaud this one.
