Our FIRST 1+1 of the year will be the March 1+1!! This contest is now open to receive 1+1 entries! :)

Enter: March 7 - 11
Score: March 12 - 15

Please read the RULES section before entering or scoring.

For those wondering why I haven't posted a schedule for this year's 1+1's, *I* require a bit more flexibility this year and posting tentative dates and then changing/moving them would be a hassle for everyone.
So, that being said, there will be 1+1 comps in the following months - the exact dates will be posted at the start of each month - or as close as I can get to the start. ;) Thanks for your understanding!

STORMY

words and music by Soddy Bottoms

Stormy where you going to
maybe I could go with you
you know I'd beg steal or borrow

Maybe baby after while
as she left she just smiled
forecast looks lonely tomorrow

Unlucky me for lovin you
I should have known when that cold breeze blew
tears for today lonely tomorrow

I cant take these stormy nights
I'll be prayin for sunshine
tears for today lonely tomorrow

My skies are gray and I've turned blue
survivin the hail of lovin you
tears for today lonely tomorrow

I cant take these stormy nights
I'll be prayin for sunshine
tears for today lonely tomorrow
I have been fortunate enough to get a great bite of the Apple of Life. One thing I know for sure. Watch out for the Worms!

I Shot A Woman In Reno (Just To Watch Her Die)
© ANeckenderMusic 2012

http://thenastyangel...o-watch-her-die

Iím lookiní for my baby
All over town
I not seen her lately
Sheís messiní round
Now Iím a patient man
I can understand
But I canít take
A love that is fake

So I got a shotgun
Inside my coat
And I got an achin
Inside my throat
And I got a snake
Inside my mind
I just canít take
Her low down lyin

Her eyes were open
When she hit the floor
But her heart was not beatin
Low down no good whore
Time seemed to go so slow
As I said goodbye
I listened to my gunshot echo
As I watched her die

Now Iím so lonely
Deep and dark in hell
I killed my baby
Thereís no-one to tell
I canít turn back time
I canít lose my mind
Just keep walkin
Down the same old line

Her eyes were open
When she hit the floor
But her heart was not beatin
Low down no good whore
Time seemed to go so slow
As I said goodbye
I listened to my gunshot echo
As I watched her die

Dorothy
© Don Sechelski 2012

Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies
With Uncle Henry, who was a farmer and Aunt Em
Who was the farmer's wife.
They grew some wheat and some corn and they raised a few pigs there
Just regular people like me and you finding comfort
in the simpler life.

Sometimes the wind would blow
Shake that old house to and fro
Life is not all blue skies
As everyone knows.
Rainbows follow rain
Gray skies turn blue again
Laughter covers the pain
As everyone knows

Nights are deep and dark in the midst of the great Kansas prairie.
A sky full of stars, no one for miles just crickets
Crickets and God.
Darkness like a blanket can twist up a little girl's nightmares
Scrarecrows and Tinmen come to visit
And it don't seem that odd.

Sometimes the wind would blow
Shake that old house to and fro
Life is not all blue skies
As everyone knows.
Rainbows follow rain
Gray skies turn blue agan
Laughter covers the pain
As everyone knows.

I wait with the dolls and the dresses you left behind
Out on the yellow brick road, what will you find?

Sometimes the wind will blow
Shake this old house to and fro
Life is not all blue skies
As everyone knows
Rainbows follow rain
Gray skies turn blue again
Laughter covers the pain
As everyone knows
Laughter covers the pain
As Everyone knows.
Lately I'm feeling my inner dog.

Falling Deep

All Music/Lyrics Steve Ison

I saw the photograph
You swore it wasn't you
and the point in your direction was a lie.
So you're re-remembering
another way to view
where you only tried to be her friend and mine...

Aah you've been Falling Deep
You aint the kind to be counting sheep online
While the wolves are sleeping round
their dreams of loving you never found..

A rainy afternoon
You're aching for her touch
in a room of drunken laughter out of line
Still you'd say its all been her
and if you'd felt enough
then you know you could've had her anytime.

Aah you've been Falling Deep
You aint the kind to be counting sheep online
While the wolves are sleeping round
their dreams of loving

...you never found the rays of the sun to give you hope for getting home
Smile and drink in the night then you're alone..

Aah you been Falling Deep
You aint the kind to be counting sheep online
While the wolves are sleeping round
their dreams of loving
You never found.....

You never found....
You never found....
You're never found....

Toppermost
(Nigel Quin)

I saw you walking out today
Once again you came my way
Never a chance to say hello
No time to speak, itís time to go
Iíve got to do it
Put myself through it
But itís so hard to do with people around

But itís got to be done
You are my number one
You are the toppermost for me

Every time you walk by
I always try and catch your eye
A glance from you would make my day
A night with you is what I pray
But what if you say no
What if you say just go
When I ask you to be my girl

But itís got to be done
You are my number one
You are the toppermost for me

Have I got the nerve?
I know itís more than I deserve
Now you are oh so near
Iíve got to overcome this fear

Iíve got to do it
Put myself through it
But itís so hard to do with people around

But itís got to be done
You are my number one
You are the toppermost for me
You are the toppermost for me
You are the toppermost
Number one poppermost
You are the toppermost for me

Spirits

© 2012 Andy LeFevre music and lyrics

Candle light flickers as the spirits come to call
Quiet whispers in the leaves, shadows dancing on your wall
Takes me to a place, more alive than Iíve ever been
If you know the place I speak of then youíll know the spirits within

Spirits floating all around, waiting to be found
Hear them in the restless breeze and raindrops on the ground
And the mischief shining in your eyes and the laughter we have found
take me distant places far and wide to the spirits all around

Wood smoke scents the evening to the crackling sound of flames
Your eyes catch the moon light, as you turn and call my name
Oh, ripples on the water as their breath begins to show
Leaves impressions in your mind, where theyíll end youíll never know

Spirits floating all around, waiting to be found
Hear them in the restless breeze and raindrops on the ground
And the mischief shining in your eyes and the laughter we have found
take me distant places far and wide to the spirits all around

Take my hand and stay a while, what do you feel and see?
Oh I donít know, where they go, but theyíre back when youíre with me

Spirits floating all around, waiting to be found
Hear them in the restless breeze and raindrops on the ground
And the mischief shining in your eyes and the laughter we have found
take me distant places far and wide to the spirits all around

Candle light flickers as the spirits come to call
Quiet whispers in the leaves, shadows dancing on your wall

Something (Soundclick)
music and lyrics: Brian Hayter

I waited all my life to feel something Iíll probably never feel.
I had a dream last nightóI kept falling asleep at the wheel.
And maybe thatís a sign that what it is I want
Isnít worth my time.
Please. Something to live for. Something true.

I donít know what I wantóthatís probably why Iíve had so much trouble trying to find it.
But the funny thing of life: the more we try the more thereís nothing all around us.
And maybe I will find what it is I want.
And maybe I will find, please, something to live for. Something true.

Heart With a Beat to Salvage
© Kime/Cox BMI
Lyrics-Kimberly Hales Kime
Music/Vocals/Guitar- Valerie Cox

I canít force together pieces of us
when weíre damaged from the madness
of your wayward touch
Iím punch drunk from the sadness
I never knew you'd hurt me like this
Such pain and bitterness
All because of your wayward kiss

Chorus
But you say
No matter how broken we are
Thereís a breath left to take
no matter how jaded we are
Thereís a life left to save
Despite all the wrongs,
goodbyes uttered in despair
Thereís a heart with a beat to salvage somewhere

Bridge
I know love can survive from the brink
And salvation can rise from the charred debris
To forgive is not the question
To forget is the hardest task
it's not the easiest thing to do
to unbreak a broken glass

Musical Break

Chorus
But you say
No matter how broken we are
Thereís a breath left to take
no matter how jaded we are
Thereís a life left to save
Despite all the wrongs,
goodbyes uttered in despair
Thereís a heart with a beat to salvage somewhere
Thereís a heart with a beat to salvage somewhere

Uninvited Ghosts

UNINVITED GHOSTS
© 2012 by Sharon Stepler

Uninvited ghosts
Wait inside my door
Hover in the hallway
Glide across the floor
They donít try to scare me
They leave me alone
But uninvited ghosts
Freeze me to the bone

Uninvited ghosts
Move in pantomime
I donít need to hear them
I know all their lines
I canít change the ending
They ignore my pleas
Uninvited ghosts
Bring me to my knees

Those ghosts are all I see
Since you walked out on me

Uninvited Ghosts
Act out old mistakes
All those one-last-chances
And that final break
Now in an empty house
I play the lonely host
Just me and one more bottle
And uninvited ghosts
"First we sing, then we understand." -- Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

“THAT COULD’VE BEEN ME”
By Tom Tognaci

http://soundclick.co...cfm?id=11500275

V1
Well, I use to wonder
How it might have been
With a big ole house, four car garage, more money than I could spend
Living like a king,
In a fantasy where I
would have everythingÖ
Everything money could buy

V2
Well, I don’t know why
I let this build in me
I knew it was wrong, it wasn’t right,
and perhaps a bit crazy
Oh, but there he'd be,
Just some guy on a magazine,
But I’d feel the envy
Turning my blue eyes to green

CH1
That could’ve been meÖÖÖ
Walking with that pretty woman by my side
Looking like that guy whose fortune’s just arrived
Living the life that I have surely been denied
And I’m all torn inside
Cause that could’ve been me

V3
I spent the next ten years struggling with it all
I had lost my job; then, all the rest, when the markets took their fall
I couldn’t pay the rent, and the wolves were at my door
I tossed my last cent in a well wishing for more

V4
While the good Lord moves in a strange and subtle way
I was stretched beyond the point where I broke down and began to pray
That’s when I saw him there, looking bent and out of place
I couldn’t help but stare, as he tried to hide his face

CH2
Yea, that could’ve been me
Sitting on that corner with my face in hands
Living like some stray amongst the garbage cans
Looking just like some old man no one understands
I know God has his plans
And that could’ve been me

BR
Of all what would have been...
Of all what could have been...
And of all what should have been...
...That could’ve been me

V5
I stood frozen in the highlights of his fate
As I felt an awful burden lift up from me like a weight
I felt freed inside, as I turned to walk away
But, I almost died when I thought I heard him sayÖ..

CH3
That could’ve been me
Looking like the kind of guy who’s got it all
The kind of guy that gets up after there’s a fall
Someone you can go to when you’re feeling small
And he’s there standing tall
And that could’ve been me
"I Know The Truth By My Struggle Against It"

Razorblade

by Jason Kalman

And I can see you seethe
Over satellite feed
One-inch resolution of your face
I’ll call the bomb strike in
Before the counterstrike begins
When winning is the last thing that I need

What caused the fight to start?
Diplomacy fall apart
Was it the embargo of your touch?
Reasoning fading fast
Starving until my last breath
And I declared war

Razorblade love cuts me down
And I feel the blood run down my chest
From a Razorblade….love

I sit here in my war room
Alone to find the one move
With maps and charts of targets that would hurt
But I can see your face
I remember your embrace
How can I destroy the one I love

If there was one last chance
To call a truce that’d last
I’d declare a ceasefire right now
But I know you too well
It wouldn't last to tell
How my love for you will carry on
Till my last breath

Razorblade love cuts me down
And I feel the blood run down my chest
From a Razorblade….love
http://www.kalmanmus...

I have no idea where I'm going and it feels spectacular!

Additionally, thanks to all of you (contestants and voters) for having extreme patience with me and the running of this contest. It takes me much longer to get things done, and when the fatigue hits - forget it! I am TOAST! But I appreciate you for having confidence in me regardless and that you still value my more limited participation in this community....it means the world to me!

Yikes, my scores 'ghosted' away this month!!

Congrats to Ironknee (top and bottom of contests this month!) and Jason - great efforts!

Jason - cracking song this month my top pick for it's originality.

Scored Thinman 2nd - great sounding guitar and story. Scored Ironknee 3rd -that melody is still growing on me.

Thanks to all the non-contestant scorers and to Bubbs - hope you've recovered!

Congrats! I had 1 & 2 reversed but both deserved to win. I thought Kim's tune would have placed higher. I really liked the groove of it. You never know. Look at Steve's tune. I loved the quirkiness of it but knew it wouldn't go #1 because of that. Great work Steve. Daddio's tune was a fav too.

Really disturbed about the 1's and 2's I saw in the mix, and not just for one artist. Personal preference--I get that--but the effort made with these songs did not deserve those numbers. I can see (barely though) a 3 here and there. My personal vote will never go less than a 4 because of the effort involved unless that effort is completely lame, although that's not something I've seen much in these contests.

Congrats to Ironknee and Jason. Great work, guys.
Altogether a very strong group of songs. Scoring was very difficult.
I had Thinman at the top of my list, that little guitar riff totally hooked me.
Scubed was high on my list too.
I want to add that I was a little disturbed by the 1.0 and 2.0 scores also.

Zeek and daddio, some folks opted to try and use the full 1-10 rating - doubling up on some as needed. Some chose to keep to the traditional scoring. Either is okay by me...the rating 1-10 is really quite difficult. So keep in mind that the 1's and 2's you see might be because the voter was rating them 1-10 rather than attributing a "1=awful" score. Does that make sense?

Congratulations Jason and Tom. The victory is well deserved. Thank you to Bubbles for putting so much work on this.

I'm really enjoying these contests, mostly just loving all the great songwriting and talent.

Really dug the supernatural theme this month.

Zeek/Daddio Ė no need for concern Ė and just to echo what Bubbles has said. See below extract from the rules post Ė I have highlighted the key bit. I used the 1 to 10 method and I can see that others did too. A Ď1í (or Ď2í) does not mean that the song is bad.

Scoring guidelines:
You are encouraged to rate the songs against each other within the context of the contest. e.g. if there are 10 songs you could use the full range of scores (1 to 10). If there are more than 10 songs the scores of 1 to 8 may be used more than once. A score of 1 wouldnít necessarily mean a poor song just the least best in that particular contest.

Congratulations to Ironknee and Jason for two great songs! :) I had you two tied for second place, right behind Daddio's "Dorothy," which I think is just wonderful. The entries overall were really good this month.

I'm really tickled about how "Uninvited Ghosts" did in the rankings - thanks to those of you who gave it good marks. It's a quirky little song that refuses to let go of me these days - still working on the full New Orleans- style version.

About the scoring: Since Bubbles hadn't mentioned the 10-1 rnking option, I used my usual scoring system this time. I did use ranks instead of points in the Feb song contest & liked how that system forced me to analyze what I liked best and least in each entry and how strongly I felt about each song. That said, if the majority doesn't want to use it, i probably won't either - those low numbers are unsettling and misleading if we're not all on the same page on scoring.

Scubed,

No. You are right, I didn't expressly mention it - but I did (as I do every 1+1 and Nige does for the full comps) encourage people participating either with an entry or with a vote to re-familiarize themselves with the RULES and both of us provide a link directly to those RULES. Nige made the addition in February after much discussion and it is stated and highlighted in bright blue right there for contestants and voters alike.

It should be pretty easy to tell which voters used the full range or assigned point values...I think both provide valuable information. Even in a contest, feedback is feedback, and a listen is a listen. We are a great group of unique individuals and I see any feedback as a positive thing!

The fact that anyone here at all cares to put a song in the mix or takes their valuable time to vote speaks to the encouragement this community employs!!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I would hate for Muse's Muse to fall victim to the Lake Wobegone Effect. That would definitely negate the impetus to grow, would it not?

Just thinking out loud....

WOW! Thanks all of you!!!! This story-telling type of song is very new to me, and although I had high hopes, I knew it could have ended with a crash (see March Lyric Results...thanks Andy :P for it's mention ).
The scoring seemed diffrent this month...but, I'm not complaining. I have some thoughts on this.........I would love to post with everyone at the songs feedback section.

Thanks again, to all the voters.....and to of course, our Bubbles......I rushed to finish writting and recording my song to get it entered into the contest....and was afraid I was too late, and would have to wait another two months to get it in.
Thanks again Bubbles!!

Many congrats to winner and all the rest

My top was SoddyBottoms which I really did think was a well played and sung song - it had the feel of a "standard".
I also liked Doink's song a lot

I liked the rest too - pleasure to be part of the field - good company

Thanks to everyone

ok...but I don't like that way of scoring. My brain can't wrap around a 1 not being bad...old school guy I guess...

I can understand that and itís not easy ranking the songs. I suppose if you looked at the top 10 in the charts would the song at #10 we worse than the other 9? Or course not. But it that given week there were 9 songs better (more popular) than the song at #10.

Also just something about the way I score. With the old method I rarely give a 10 or 9, I think before this ranking system I had only ever awarded a 10 twice in 5 years-ish. So it cuts both ways. Yes there are more 1s and 2s but there are also more 9s and 10s Ė well there are from me anyway :)

Bubbles, my point was only that I thought most scorers would forego the option of ranking. Even after Nige highlighted the new scoring guidelines in the Feb comp thread itself, only 7 out of 18 voters used ranking in the Feb contest (see his Feb 17 post in the contest thread). While I think it's a good option (and a good critiquing aid, as I indicated in the Feb comp thread), I'd rather not use a different scoring system than others are using. :)

The ranking system is only a guideline (not a rule) that's because I know some people are uncomfortable with it, and I understand that, so as long as the scores are between 1 and 10 it doesn't really matter which method is adopted. I am trying to encourage folk to use the full range of scores within the context of the contest. If they choose not to it's not a problem.

A couple of years back many people on here were saying the 1 to 5 scoring range wasn't big enough, then when we made it 1 to 10, they wanted 0.5s as well (so that would be 1 to 20ish). Yet many don't use the range we already have (particularly the lower end). Most folk rarely step below 4 and some never step above 8, so I am trying to move away from that and the fact that 1 is poor and 10 is a gold Disc.

Congrats to the Winners ! I used the ranking system this time for the 1st time and found it quite difficult and felt a little guilt as I had to hand out the low numbers instead of giving several songs the same numbers..

End result and I think everyone agrees once again the best song won !
I have been fortunate enough to get a great bite of the Apple of Life. One thing I know for sure. Watch out for the Worms!

Thanks Bubbles for working this contest..you are the true winner here :)

Thanks for everyone who liked Razorblade. I know it is very dark lyrically and musically, so thanks for listening!

Tom, great song and well-deserved win!!!! I loved all the songs this month!!! It was tough choosing only 1 song to win, but as tough as it was, I had AndyLeF first and Kim and doinker tied for second...so I did deviate a little from the ranking system... :o

Thanks again everyone, especially Bubbles :)
