I went ahead and got the MXL R144 (well, R40, same thing) for $80 bucks, seemed like a good idea at the time, and I'm VERY pleased with the sound I get from it. It's smooth and dark, like chocolate should be. When I throw in my AT 2020 to sweeten it, it sounds fabulous!
