" That '70s Song "
First off a big thank you to all involved, it's the participation of the members here, both contestant and non contestant that makes this competition possible.
Secondly, while trying to merge two topics together I lost some posts, including the station link, ( well actually the entire thread that I had pinned

) but the song and lyric entries are still in this thread....some place... and the station link can be reached here.
" That '70s Station "

Some Mini Crits of the songs.
Fright Night - This was so much fun to listen to. Ron and SIB wrote a great lyric and the music fit perfectly. Ron did an outstanding job bringing it all together - loved the creepy organ solo. Reminded me of Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Great fun, from the almost operatic start through to the finish. A fun lyric, treated well. My fav. i thought we were gonna break into thriller after the intro! love this. has everything melody, lyric, instrumentation, production, drama, might be limited to the halloween genre, but great stuff all the same!
Saturday Night - This song is the only one of the bunch that really reflects the 70's disco vibe. Full marks for getting into the spirit of the seventies! like the lyric, not a huge fan of the chorus musically, verses are spot on. loving the disco beat and the funk guitar.
My Baby's Coming Back - I think it would have worked much better if the singer was the wife rather than the mother of the soldier. I found the lyric a little odd, and the musical and vocal treatment didn't really fit it for me. lyric's not really my cup of tea. vocals are great though.
Fourth Of July - 2 Brits join forces to write a song with a treasured American holiday as their hook. And bless the queen, they pull it off. A lovely song all around. David's melodies are always lovely to listen to. The higher reaches of his voice are something we should hear more of! Really like the harmonies in the chorus and the melody's very strong also.
The Baby Song - This would have been my top pick but I had to score it down a bit for the missing "yeahs" in the bridge. - Don and Wendy should do more duets together. Their vocals are heavenly. And a new duo is formed! I really enjoyed the song and I would have scored it even higher had it complied with all of the constraints. Like the idea of the conversational vocal, not 100% sure of the lyric, and the vocals get a bit busy at the end.
B.M.H.A.T.W. - I just loved the shifts in meter/tempo. - The drums are great and the lyric is thought provoking but I think Mark missed the mark vocally. Pretty experimental but, for me, the experiment didn't work. Production & vocal are good but lyrics get lost in some of the verses. think the time changes conflict a bit much, and take away from the song.
Baby's Just Having Fun - Great lyric and a good vocal by Stew. Given the extra time, I think Stew could have filled out the recording a bit more. Maybe play to click or drumbeat next time, perhaps a bit more of a quiet loud dynamic to the various sections, time change perhaps sounds unintentional rather than purposeful? (if that makes sense) i like the guitar solos though, but i would perhaps slow down the guitar strumming slightly to give a tidier feel to the playing.
Baby Says - Loved it. Great vocal, great treatment and great song. Good song, kind of has a U2 vibe to it, but would still have fit in quite well into the progressive side of the '70s
Well that about raps it up here folks, had great fun hosting this comp. as I hope everyone else did. Hope to see everyone back for the next one, maybe sometime in January.
