September 1+1 Song Competition

The philosophy of the 1+1 comp is that it is something someone could perform at an open mic night. Typically it would be one guitar, one voice. Simple effects may be used but bear in mind the open mic idea of one voice and one live instrument and you won't go far wrong.
You are not allowed to enter your song if you have paid for the production, mixing, mastering, writing or performance of either the Lyric or Music. For no part of your song can you have paid anyone money.

Civilized Men

Fresh from their musters and straight into war
Battalions of soldiers marched onto the shore.
Some there for love of their God and their country
Others were fighting for more
In a war between civilized men.
Praying for silence that follows the storm
They called out to mothers and wives safe at home.
Barraged and beleaguered, they fell like a forest
Then bled side by side, all alone.
And they died there like civilized men.
I look to the heavens and wonder at us
How angry we all seem to be.
While inside a doorway, a victim of war
Longs for a moment of peace.
The winners and losers, the treaties and deals
The wounds that will fester and never quite heal
The soldiers amassed at the edge of a nightmare
Eating their last blessed meal
In the strongholds of civilized men.
I look to the heavens and wonder at us

I am really pleased with 3rd place, especially with this crop of songs Just for the record I had Civilised Man as my top pick but it was really hard to separate out some of the songs.

Congrats to the winners. I noticed the final order is pretty much how I voted so you are a smart bunch.
Interesting how the same song received votes from 3 to 10 in a couple of cases. Some songs move one person and not another. All comes down to taste.

A good bunch of songs. I had Alistair and Wendy tied at the top with Thinman next but like someone else said, I had a hard time separating the songs.

Wow. I'm very suprised (but grateful!). Many thanks to Bubbles for running the comp and to all who voted (especially the non-contestants).
Like Zeek, I had "Civilized Men" way in front. It's a great song with a great lyric and is one of the best 1+1s I have heard. It moves me every time I listen to it. I think it should have won.

Congratulations to all the entrants and thanks to Bubbles! I had the top two contenders reversed (Daddio/Jonie 1st and Alistair 2nd). It was hard to decide how to score the other songs though. I really enjoyed all of the songs. Colin's song was very nice, I loved the bridge in Nigel's tune, Soddy had some cool blues working, and Thinman had that cool rhythm guitar working. Stars In My Eyes (Tracy), I was last in one of these contests too. Don't let it discourage you. Mostly the judging is a matter of taste and it is subjective. Thanks to all the non contestant voters too.

Great efforts by everyone this month ! Congrats Alistair on the win. Well Deserved.. If it wouldn't for the Hiss I would have had to given you a 10.. So I didn't give a 10 .. Nige was my favorite and got my nine.. I like the light heartedness of his tune.. plus Nige reminds me of my childhood friend of 50 years ,, Nige Im referrin to what he used to look like, I know you are a young man !
After that for me Daddio , Alistair , Colin and Thinman were subjective and I went the easy way and gave all the same marks..
My little Diddy was 1 that I had written about 5 years back and recorded shortly before the deadline ,this was the 1st time it has ever been on a word processor .. I also improvise this one and it varies ,sometimes it comes out better than others..
I really appreciate the High marks and comps from you folks.. Looking forward to the next time..

If I'd have voted (Daddio got that chore) I would have put Chances right on top where it is with Wendy's a close second. I also liked Nige's, Soddy's and Colin's songs and would probably have had them in a three way tie for third. BTW, Nige's title threw me because, as everyone here in the states knows, it should be "My Baby Don't Do No Shoes".
Had this been the lyric comp, Leaving You, would have received a very high mark from me. I did listen all the way through and think the effort was commendable but I have to say, I the lyric is good enough to warrant a real production and vocal if starsinmyeyes decides to revisit it at some point.

I was one of those with Civilised Men out in front, simply because I found it the most interesting original, musically. I had Chances and Burn 'Em All tied for second place.
I thought the overall standard was about the highest I can recall hearing in a 1+1 contest, so well done everyone!

Hey everyone! Congratulations to the winners Alistair and Daddio (you were amongst my top votes as well) for their two fabulous songs! That's real talent for you, well done guys! I wanted to mention that I loved Colin Wards’ song and of course Nige Q always produces quality songs as well.
