The contests will be run for approximately 10 days (6 for entering, 4 for scoring) - these dates are provisional and will depend on the mod running it.

Mar 1+1: 8 - 13 (enter) Mar 14 Mar 17 (scorecards) - see below for result

The top two songs from each 1+1 competition will be posted in this thread in preparation for their Year End Final. (Tied songs will also go through).

All contests will now use the 1 to 10 scoring method. If you can't be bothered to read them go here :D

The song that is entered into a Monthly Competition must be the same recording with no changes made for the Final Competition.

The Year End Song Comps are for active musers only, so if a writer has not been present on the board since the start of November 2010 the moderator has the right to disqualify an entry

Someone may choose not have their song move on to the final competition if they wish.

For the 1+1 comps the 10 qualifying songs from the 5 contests will compete in the 1+1 year end final.

For more information on the contests, scoring etc. see the Song Contest Rules.

STRONG
Words & Music by Neal K

When the times are tough and the sea is rough
And you can't find your way to shore
When the night is long and you're all alone
And it's hard to care anymore
When your hope is gone, how do you know you're strong?

It's easy to be so carefree
When then the tide is rolling your way
When everything's fine you just roll down that line
And faith is just a word that you say
When nothing is wrong, how do you know you're strong?

Your heart carries the seed
Of power and the will to succeed
If love is what you feed it
You'll find strength there when you need it

When you're down and out and full of doubt
Just believe you'll find the way
This too shall pass; pain never lasts
When you face the world unafraid
You can get along if you believe you're strong

You can carry on when fear is gone
And you just know you're strong
The forest would be silent if only the best birds sang.

Her Quintessential Life
jonie & daddio

Verse
A garden walk, a mountain view
The elms are old, the roof is new
Where love is aiming to be true
And nothing fades to gray.

You save your pennies in a jar
Sell your soul to get this far
Then comes the day she loads her car
And drives your life away

Chorus
She's headed for her quintessential life
No fairy tales, no superficial strife
She won't be having second thoughts
So don't wait up tonight
She's headed for her quintessential life.

Verse
You must have missed the shifting gears
Though she's been telling you for years
If life is just as it appears
She needs something more

"What about the kids," you say
Knowing they've all moved away
You can change if she'll just stay
She's heard it all before.

Chorus
She's headed for her quintessential life
Nor fairy tales, no non-essential strife
She won't be having second thoughts
So don't wait up tonight
She's headed for her quintessential life

Bridge
You gave her everything you thought befit her
As if she gave a damn for things that glitter
And somewhere in your mind
You've known it all the time
You never let her shine
No, you never let her shine

Chorus
She's headed for her quintessential life
Where no one will mistake her for a wife
She won't be having second thoughts
So don't wait up tonight
She's headed for her quintessential life.
Lately I'm feeling my inner dog.

Alive

Everything is changing

New flowers on the trees

They've always come and gone

but they never got a strong

reaction from me before

but this time I feel more...
...Alive

Everything is changing
The poetry inside
I used to doubt
Now I have to let it out
I have to let it free
It feels so good to be......Alive

Never heard the sky
Never drank a season
Never felt the breath of the earth
Never smelled the rain
Never touched a reason
Not until this moment of birth

Everything is changing
A new song in the air
strikes a chord in me
Its like youve made me see
A beauty that always was there
Now I'm gloriously aware...
...Alive

Birmingham
By Len and Daddio

I drove off left her behind
Seven hours out I changed my mind
Turned the wheel and crossed the line
Back to Birmingham

Birmingham, Birmingham
Seven hours out of Birmingham
I found out what a fool I am
Seven hours out of Birmingham

All those stupid things I said
Laid the blame right on her head
All along it was me instead
Back in Birmingham

Birmingham, Birmingham
Seven hours out of Birmingham
I found out what a fool I am
Seven hours out of Birmingham

Anger's like a fire, it burns and then it's gone
All you get it cold regret and the shame of doing wrong.

Got myself a tank of gas
Seven red roses and a pardon to ask
Right back down those roads I passed
Back to Birmingham

Birmingham, Birmingham
Seven hours out of Birmingham
I found out what a fool I am
Seven hours out of Birmingham
Lately I'm feeling my inner dog.

Civilized Men

by Jonie and Daddio

Fresh from their musters and straight into war
Battalions of soldiers marched onto the shore.
Some there for love of their God and their country
Others were fighting for more
In a war between civilized men.

Praying for silence that follows the storm
They called out to mothers and wives safe at home.
Barraged and beleaguered, they fell like a forest
Then bled side by side, all alone.
And they died there like civilized men.

I look to the heavens and wonder at us
How angry we all seem to be.
While inside a doorway, a victim of war
Longs for a moment of peace.

The winners and losers, the treaties and deals
The wounds that will fester and never quite heal
The soldiers amassed at the edge of a nightmare
Eating their last blessed meal
In the strongholds of civilized men.

I look to the heavens and wonder at us
How angry we all seem to be.
While inside a doorway, a victim of war
Longs for a moment of peace.

There are no martyrs who die to defend
Just fathers and brothers, our children, our friends.
All that remains of the valor and vengeance
Are the tears we all cry in the end.
And we call ourselves civilized men.
Lately I'm feeling my inner dog.

Chances

Words and Music: Alistair S

She may look into your eyes for reassurance
May look to see what trace of her remains
May come to your back door
As so many times before
There's a chance she may do that again

She may call you in the early hours of morning
May call you when she's lost or needs a friend
May catch you unawares
Off your guard and unprepared
There's a chance she may do that again

A woman, once a lover, a promise you can't keep
An itch you can't identify on nights you cannot sleep
Her finger tracing patterns of a man you used to be
A woman, once a lover, now a distant memory

Who once knew all there is to know about you
How you changed because nobody stays the same
But she's been changing too
She's not the girl you knew,
(And) Chances are you'd fall for her again

That woman, once a lover, that promise you can't keep
That itch you can't identify on nights you cannot sleep
That finger tracing patterns of a man you used to be
That woman, once a lover, now a distant memory

She has needs and she has hopes and aspirations
She has plans and she has roles that you could fill
She had you in her sights, and
There's chance that she still might
But chances are, you know, she never will

She has seas you never charted, she has depths left unexplored
Conversations never started, feelings unaccounted for
There's much left to discover, but it's best you let her be
A woman, once a lover, and a distant memory

Smile On Your Face
by Mark Smith

Park the car don't worry about the world let's just start walking baby we ain't going too far
All the words you said girl I must say all day been running through my head

One call, two call, free fall for it all and if you're wondering I'll be in it for the long haul
It could rain and it'd still be a beautiful day to be here with you feels like fate

And if anybody asks me about the smile on my face, I'll just laugh and tell them about this day
And the smile on your face

If I could just have one memory for the rest of my life I'd be happy with right now
Even if all that I could recall was the taste of your mouth

Ch

Who cares about tommorrow
Today is so beautiful
Who cares about tommorrow
Because right now you're so beautiful

Title: You Ain't Here Anymore
Written by: Chapman Jones

http://soundclick.co....cfm?id=9855530

Lyrics:

In the deepest cobalt blue of a moon lit night
The swayin' of the water's capped with sapphire light
We picked up some flat rocks and skipped them on the lake
Mine went out to five and yours went out to eight

As the ripples in the water made their circles back to shore
It seemed to take forever maybe a little bit more
And we sat there on the bank with my head in your lap
It's a shame we don't have anymore nights like that

[BREAK]

Up at five thirty, a little butter on my toast
Looking out the window, did I see shadows of a ghost
I guess it's just my eyes playing those worn out jokes
You know, the kind you get when ya got someone in your heart that ya miss

Picked up my car keys and my old leather coat
Kind of chilly out there this morning, I don't wanna get cold
Can't find my gloves, do you know where I might have laid them down and then I swore
Damn, I keep forgetting, I keep forgetting, I keep forgetting you ain't here anymore

[CHORUS OR JUST A BRIDGE]
My head's all a-shambles, my thoughts keep a ramblin
My heart is a-aching for you girl
There's no way I can turn, without feeling the burn
Cause you ain't here anymore

The lights are low and the flicker of the candles seem to dance
I got it in my mind tonight I might have half a chance
A waiter brought the menu, snapped his fingers for some wine
But I never learn French so you had to order mine

We sat there with you trying to teach me how to say je t'aime (I love you)
You were laughing so hard and asked if I'd been smoking hemp
I said I'll never speak French but I know how to love you back
It's a shame we don't have anymore nights like that

[BREAK]

A dusting of a winters snow blows to the edge of the street
Man, I just hate the cold because it hates my feet
I'll bring in some kindlin wood and fire up some heat
You know, I think I heard them calling for an inch or two of snow

Hey babe, I'll warm up the coffee, if you don't mind
I'd like to make a fresh pot, but I don't wanna take the time
What are you doin, hon, are you busy, it's awful quiet in there, and then I swore
Damn, I keep forgetting, I keep forgetting, I keep forgettin, you ain't here anymore

[CHORUS]

On the deepest cobalt blue of a moon lit night
The swayin of the water's capped with sapphire light
And we sat there on the bank with my head in your lap
It's a shame we don't have anymore nights like that
It's a shame we don't have anymore nights like that
There ain't no more nights like that.....
