*note, all contests will be run from the Contests Forum

The top two songs from each competition will be posted in this thread in preparation for their respective Year End Finals.

All contests will now use the 1 to 5 scoring method. If there is a 3 way tie for first or a tie for second it will be broken by a count back. The song which received the highest score out of five or most occurrences there of will move on. If they are tied still it will then be broken by the next highest score or most occurrences there of. If by chance they still remain tied thru all the scores they will both go through to the final.

The song that is entered into a Monthly Competition must be the same recording with no changes made for the Final Competition.

The Year End Song Comps are for active musers only, so if a writer has not been present on the board since the start of November 2009 the moderator has the right to disqualify an entry

Someone may choose not have their song move on to the final competition if they wish.

For the Open Format comps the 10 qualifying songs from the 5 contests will compete in the Open Format year end final.

For the 1+1 comps the 12 qualifying songs from the 6 contests will compete in the 1+1 year end final.

For more information on the contests, see the Song Contest Rules.

Cheers

Nige :)

Roller Coaster Ride (acoustic)

© 2009 Andrew Richardson

(1)
Filled with joy we climbed inside
Our chance to finally take the ride
My heart beat hard as we settled in
Trying to hide a boyish grin
then rattling rails, holding hands
high above amusement stands,
We fell together, two as one
Racing in the evening sun

(Ch)
The time of our lives
A rollercoaster ride
Holding on to love
we could not be denied
Horizons streched so far and wide
Soaring through the sky
The way we felt inside
A rollercoaster ride

(2)
Corkscrews loops and thrilling drops
At Times we'd almost seem to stop
Frozen in a point of time
The stillness of a perfect climb
Then slipping down the other side
We blew through turns then off we'd glide
All for real, we werent pretending
Never thought about the ending

(Ch)
The time of our lives
A rollercoaster ride
Holding on to love
we could not be denied
Horizons streched so far and wide
Soaring through the sky
The way we felt inside
A rollercoaster ride

(Br/3)
Well the peaks got lower and lower
With each successive dip
And our ride slowed down and stopped
As the moment lost its grip
caramel apples and candy floss
Chill of september a sense of loss
College days and moving on
Just memories now that your gone

(Ch)
The time of our lives
A rollercoaster ride
Holding on to love
we could not be denied
Horizons streched so far and wide
Soaring through the sky
The way we felt inside
A rollercoaster ride

Goddess By The Sea (1+1 version)

Lyrics: Joan Hajduk (Jonie)
Music: Alistair Sutherland (Alistair S)

Before she found a guru
And a karaoke bar
Before she got a cell phone
A condo and a car
Before she moved beyond
Those days she spent with me,
Connie was a goddess by the sea

Before she married Eddie
Raised a couple kids
Before the lies and liquor
Had them on the skids
Before the years destroyed
Her immortality,
Connie was a goddess by the sea

I can still recall the way the men would stare
The rays of golden sunlight dancing in her hair
Carved in a bikini, Aphrodite on the shore
I promise to remember her, the way she was before

Before the diagnosis
ďWeíve done all we can doĒ
Before her ravaged body
Failed to pull her through
Before the sun would take her
For all eternity,
Connie was a goddess by the sea

I can still recall the way the men would stare
The rays of golden sunlight dancing in her hair
Carved in a bikini, Aphrodite on the shore
I promise to remember her, the way she was before

Before she found a guru
And a karaoke bar
Before she had a cell phone
A condo and a car
Before she moved beyond
The days she spent with me,
Connie was a goddess by the sea

The Walls are Thin

Words & Music by Neal K
Performed by Neal K

Verse 1
It's the law in our building: no shouting at night
Let's get along; let's be polite
The guy next to me don't follow that spin
I hear him raving 'cause the walls are thin

Verse 2
It's the law in the city: MYOB
I ignore him; he ignores me
But I see bruises on his little girl's skin
I know how they got there 'cause the walls are thin

Oh, the walls are thin
Yeah, the walls are thin

Bridge
The cops and the judges have been there and back
The mother tells tales to cover his tracks
At night the girl cries, "Daddy, please don't come in"
But I hear him go at her again and again...

Verse 3
It's the law of the jungle: you do what you can
Man versus beast; beast versus man
So tonight when I see him I'm inviting him in
But I'll have to be quiet 'cause the walls are thin
I'll have to be quiet 'cause the walls are thin

It's the law of survival: sink or swim
He'd better be grateful the walls are thin
The forest would be silent if only the best birds sang.

lyrics and music by: Jeff Knight, BMI © 2009
Performed and Produced by: Jeff Knight
KnightZone Productions
Genre: Country Rock
Target Artist: Hank Williams Jr. / Big & Rich / Montgomery Gentry

http://soundclick.co...?songid=7399841

Ver 1
I was born in Alabam
raised in Caroline
can't help the way I talk
I say ya'll all the time
might be Mississippi mud on my 4-wheel drive
or my backwoods southern drawl
you can try and take my Stars and Bars
but you can't wash redneck off

Ver 2
they say I'm an outdated tradition
and us country folk can't survive
but I got news for them city slickers
this ole redneck's still alive
I can work this land all day long
make love from dusk til dawn
but my gal's so loud and proud
that you can't wash redneck off

chorus
well you can keep your beamers and cadillacs
and I'll keep my pick-up truck
u can have fancy cigars and heart attacks
while I'm living it up
there's nothing like Tennessee whiskey
and a southern gal to make me feel 10 feet tall
and if the truth be known at all, ya'll
you can't wash redneck off

music lead break Big 10

bridge
don't want no shiny rings or fancy things
just gimme a good ole fishing hole
but I'll have another toke on that rolled up smoke
then I'll be good to go

chorus
well you can keep your beamers and cadillacs
and I'll keep my pick-up truck
u can have fancy cigars and heart attacks
while I'm living it up
there's nothing like Tennessee whiskey
and a southern gal to make me feel 10 feet tall
and if the truth be known at all, ya'll
you can't wash redneck off

tag
and if the truth be known at all
you can't wash redneck off
you can't wash redneck off
you can't wash redneck off
you can't wash redneck off
and that's the fact Jack ;)

Devil Sea

Lyrics: Alistair Sutherland (Alistair S)
Music/performance : Jim Chapman (JamesJ)

You, me and the devil sea
A hole where my soul should be
I saw the devil wink at me
I heard him call my name

I paid the ferryman his dues
Told him everything I knew
I felt I was expected to
We all felt the same

We never saw it coming, but we felt it when it hit
Everyone was running as the hull began to split
The Devil Sea has taken me
And thatís the strength of it
No-oneís left to write the letters home

Just five days til we hit land
Nothing ever goes as planned
Something you should understand
Itís just a numbers game

Iím told it was a submarine
It showed up on the sonar screen
No need to warn the grunt marines
Til the torpedos came

We never saw it coming, but we felt it when it hit
Everyone was running as the hull began to split
The Devil Sea has taken me
And thatís the strength of it
No-oneís left to write the letters home

Iíve heard them singing hymns for me
ďFor Those in Peril on the SeaĒ
God donít give no guarantees
And no-one knows my name
Iím just another soul to claim

We never saw it coming, but we felt it when it hit
Everyone was running as the hull began to split
The Devil Sea has taken me
And thatís the strength of it
No-oneís left to write the letters home

Ain't That True
by Jonie and Daddio

HERE'S THE LINK!

v1
What a world we live in, boy
With men who would be kings
Imagine they can conquer life
By owning everything
Not me and you
Now, ainít that true

v2
Tons of buried treasure, boy
Who the hell needs cash
Some stale bread, a hunk of meat
Here, sitting in this trash
Enough for two
Now, ainít that true

ch1
Some dogs got it better
Some men got it worse
Some drink for the pleasure
Some, to quench the thirst
They took me in to dry me out
When I was near to dead
Said, Jesus gonna save my soul
But you saved me instead

v3
Me and you together, boy
And heroes never die
But now and then I swear I see
A sunset in your eyes
Weíre overdue
Now, ainít that true

br
I don't recall when I found you or maybe you found me
But souls like us need comfort and a little company

ch2
Some dogs got it better
Some men got it worse
Some drink for the pleasure
Some, to quench the thirst
They took me in to dry me out
When I was near to dead
Said, Jesus gonna save my soul
But you saved me instead

v4
When my time is gone, old friend
May the good Lord see you through
But heaven knows, if you go first
I donít know what Iíll do
This world is cruel
Now ainít that true
Glad I got you
Now, ain't that true
Lately I'm feeling my inner dog.

Time Is Gonna Come
by Don Sechelski and Adam Sechelski

Here's the Link

Verse
You can blame it on your mother,
Your lawyer or your priest.
You can blame it on your third grade teacher
She was recently deceased.
You can blame it on the mailman
Or on society
You can blame it on the president
Or on your own TV

Refrain
But the time is gonna come
Oh the time is gonna come
When you have to stand alone
You cannot blame it on anyone.

Verse
You can hide inside your closet
You can hide under the bed
You can hide behind your bible
And the words that Jesus said.
You can hide out on the highway
When you take it on the run
You can feel just a little bit bigger
When you hide behind your gun.

Refrain
But the time is gonna come
Oh the time is gonna come
When you have to stand there naked
You can't hide from anyone.

Bridge
Everything that goes around
Goes around
Well you know it's gonna come around too
Everything that goes around
Goes around
Well you know it's gonna come to you.

Verse
You can wrap yourself in glory
The old red, white, and blue
You can wrap yourself in misery
If that's what really suits you
You can wrap yourself in silver
You can wrap yourself in gold
You can take it all down to the marketplace
Where your dreams are bought and sold

Refrain
But the time is gonna come
Oh the time is gonna come
When the things you have mean nothing
They will belong to everyone.

Verse
You can have your power lunches
And your three martini meals
You can have your cake and eat it too
You know just how that feels
You can have yourself a party
You can have it your own way
You can have the head of the prophet
Brought to you on a silver tray

Refrain
But the time is gonna come
Oh the time is gonna come
When the things you have mean nothing
They will belong to everyone.

Outro
Everything that goes around
Goes around
Well you know it's gonna come around too

9:00 in Nashville

Words & Music by Neal K
Performed by Neal K

It's 9:00 in Nashville; I'm sure she's still awake
As the sun sets on Seattle and I make the mistake
Of thinking I should call her when she said she needed space
So I wait and now...

It's 3:00 in Nashville; way too late to call
Still I'm feeling tempted as the hours slowly crawl
She tells me that she loves me but she has a dream to chase
So I wait and now...

It's 9:00 in Nashville; and as she starts her day
This sunrise in Seattle dawns misty, cold and grey
I wish I could be with her but I'm not needed in that place
So I wait and now...

It's 9:00 in Nashville; I'm sure she's still awake
The forest would be silent if only the best birds sang.

(Even Though I shouldn't) I feel love
© 2009 Andrew Richardson

v1/
Everything inside is scanned, MRI'd and measured
All the things I've feared and all the things I've treasured
Byte by byte my memory's been analyzed and checked
Edited and debugged to eliminate defects

ch/
But when the wind blows through the long grass
On the hillside
Shadows passing from the clouds above
There inside she's in a tiny corner
And even though I shouldn't I feel love

v2/
I'm told that I'm not human - I'm a bio-robot slave
I have no heart to offer and I have no soul to save
I know they can re- program me, and they would if they knew
But I know theres more to me than all I think or do

ch/
And when the wind blows through the long grass
On the hillside
Shadows passing from the clouds above
There inside a she's in a tiny corner
And even though I shouldnt I feel love

v3 /
She's in our master's garden as I work these fields all day
Her knowledge of me gone now since they wiped her DNA
A fire that could consume me or a beacon on a hill
Tiny sparks of human dreams I never will fulfill

ch/
But when the wind blows through the long grass
On the hillside
Shadows passing from the clouds above
There inside a she's in a tiny corner
And even though I shouldnt I feel love

Here Comes The Rain
by Mark Smith

See the storm gather in your eyes
Guess I shouldn't find myself surprised
Weatherman's calling for a bit of heartache
I wonder what kind of move I can make
But it's too late

Here comes the rain
It's a storm with no name

As the sun starts to fade
We'll ruminate on the mistakes we've made
And as the day turns to night
I look into your eyes
And I think I see a bit of light

But here comes the rain
It's a storm with no name

You were the sun shining in my eyes

But here comes the rain
It's a storm with no name

Breathe The Moment

Music/Lyrics by fabkebab

Breathe The Moment

I know the future is out there
And I know about the past
So many plans like summer storms
Sweep by so fast

Forget them- Don't regret them
Breathe the moment, Breathe the moment
With me, divinely
Breathe the moment

Pasts are always gone
the present will always be
Vivid and more alive
Than futures you cant see

Forget them- Don't regret them
Breathe the moment, Breathe the moment
With me, divinely
Breathe the moment

Forget them- Don't regret them
Breathe the moment, Breathe the moment
With me, divinely
Breathe the moment

One Of Many
by David Butler

I thought in the end
You and I could still be friends
At least maybe we could try

But when I see your face
Smiling but without a trace of love
I feel like I could die

CHORUS
Cos I'm not there to hold your hand
I'm just a friend
I'm one of many

And I know one day I might understand
But right now
I'm just not ready

So I try to smile
Make it seem like I'm alright
When really I feel torn apart

Cos I know in the end
I am just another friend
When you still have my heart

CHORUS

You say it's fine
We'll meet up some other time
Soon it won't be so tough

But I don't think that's true
I don't think I'll get over you
Unless we call the whole thing off

CHORUS

I want to be the only one you see
But I know I'm one of many

Shine On

Words & Music by Neal K
Performed by Barbara S

There's a million stars in the sky, so far away
It takes years for the light to reach here
Some of the stars have died but still I see them shine
And they'll still be my guide
Oh, they light up the road
That leads me to my home, because they...
Shine on; shine on - even after they're gone
Shine on; shine on - even after they're gone

My father taught me to give, to love and live
To be strong when I sing my song
My mother nurtured my soul; she made me whole
Gave me wings to soar
Oh, though they have passed
I know their spirits last, because they...
Shine on; shine on - even after they're gone
Shine on; shine on - even after they're gone

Just like the stars so bright, my parents shine their light
Leading me though my darkest night; because they...
Shine on; shine on - even after they're gone
Shine on; shine on - even after they're gone
The forest would be silent if only the best birds sang.

With You
by David Butler (lyD)

Show me the future
Swallow my past
Tell me to love you
I'll do as you ask
With you it's all I can do

Paint me in colours
I've never seen
Take me to places
I've never been
With you everything's new

CHORUS
I've never been a loving man
but I hope I can be true
I've never been a loving man
but I know I can be with you

So do me a favour
And don't let me go
Tell me you love me
So I'll always know
With you I'll never be blue

CHORUS

With you the sun can shine down brighter than before
With you the rain may come to trip me up
But you'll be there to catch me if I fall

CHORUS

The Lurcher

Words/Music: Alistair Sutherland (Alistair S)

That wall-eyed, blue merle lurcher
Best dog that I owned
Pheasant, hare or chicken
She'd bring our dinner home
And when we'd filled our bellies
The fire our only light
She'd settle down beside me
Warm me through the night

A poacher needs a long dog
Fleet of foot and mind
A dog to chase and fetch and thieve
All at the proper time
A dog to be his partner
His equal and his friend
A dog to stand beside him
Until the bitter end

I lost her in a wager
One night on the heath
Never trust a didicoy
With gold and rotting teeth
He laughed at me for weeping
As he tied her to his van
I knew she had one master
Would only serve one man

I heard he took her lamping
I heard she wouldn't run
He shot my girl for shaming him
In front of everyone
I never had a temper
But something snapped that night
I burned him in his caravan
And serves the bastard right

Now I have a new dog
Blue merle, just the same
One blue eye and one brown eye
A dog without a name
While she is a fine dog
Skilled, and knows the art
No dog can ever fill the hole
That festers in my heart

No dog can take the shame away
That festers in my heart

"In my opinion this is a bunch of filth and garbage and we need far less this type of lyrics gettin back in the ears of our children." - from a critique received

"When I was 5 years old, my mum always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wante to be when I grew up. I wrote down, "Happy". The told me I didn't understand the assignment and I told them they didn't understand life." John Lennon.

Goodbye Sweet Child

http://soundclick.co...?songid=8219790

Terry Strickland- Lyrics
Bob Turk- Music and Vocals

Goodbye Sweet Child
©2008

V1
We don't talk about the accident, there's no need to
We're just thankful for the time we had with you
But we still can't think about you without crying
It's hard to look ahead but we're trying

V2
Last night we attended your class graduation
It was really hard a bittersweet situation
Made us so proud when they called your name
All your friends said without you it wasn't the same

Chorus
Goodbye sweet child now you're home
Holding God's hand pure and free
I can almost see your face
Saying "don't cry for me
Don't worry I'm happy here
I'm where everyone wants to be"
Goodbye sweet child
Goodbye sweet child

V3
Your grandpa and grandma don't have much to say
To them life is not supposed to go this way
Their hopes of watching you grow through the years
Have been replaced with memories, grief and tears

Repeat Chorus

I got kicked in the 00's

Chorus/
I got kicked in the noughties -
got beaten down by fate
2010 I can hardly wait
I got kicked in the noughties -
But let me put things straight
I think the tens are gonna be great

1/
I got twin towered, shock and awed
Guantanamo'd Patriot lawed
Myspace'd out, Miley Cirused
Cyberstalked, Software virused
Janet jacksoned, Credit spended
Carbon capped, I got defriended
Glenn Becked, Airport screened
Saw concorde go, I got New orleaned

<chorus>

2/
I got pirated, got I-phoned
Sarah Palined , HELOC loaned
second lifed, A Tidal wave
Simon Cowell, and abu-graib
from y2k to H1N1
Bearn Steins, Madoff, GM , Enron
crocodile hunter, that shuttle crew
From whacko jack to a decade new

<chorus>

Bridge/
Even if our houses sink under the waves
or our governments keep failing
Even if its true about 2012
The tens should be plain sailing

Nothing But Pearls

Lyrics/Music/Performance: John Smyth

[v1]
You remind me of a fable
from the days of yore,
some knight of the round table
caught that gaze of yours.
With your looking glass mirror
shattered on the floor,
you could see clearer,
that it doesn't matter anymore
and you don't have to sing that song
but before you drift along...

[chorus]
I wanna paint you in nothing,
nothing but pearls.
And chase your reflections
through riffles and swirls
I wanna paint you in nothing,
nothing but pearls.

[v2]
Well you only ate his soul
because you knew you could,
but it doesn't fill that hole
the way you thought it would.
And he covers you in petals
though it does no good,
alright, so he deserves a medal
but he never understood
and so you leave him standing on his knees
my belle dame sans merci,

[chorus]
I wanna paint you in nothing
nothing but pearls
and chase your reflections
my Waterhouse girl
I wanna paint you in nothing
nothing but pearls.

[bridge]
Well I wrote you some poetry,
an impromptu soliloquy,
carved into the willow tree.

[v3]
Now I'm not sure what I mean
by all this rambling,
but I can't draw a queen,
without a king.
Girl I would have you by the riverside
without a thing
but a strand of loosely tied
pearls on a string.
And let them fall off one by one,
just pull me under when we're done.

[chorus]
I wanna paint you in nothing
nothing but pearls
down by the river,
my Waterhouse girl
I wanna paint you in nothing
nothing but pearls....

[outtro]
nothing but pearls
nothing but pearls
nothing but pearls

TELEVISION

Here's the link
words and music by Don Sechelski

Listen, Barbara Walters, can
I try to make you understand
Won't you listen to me, Barbara, please!
I tried to get on Oprah's show
Jerry Springer told me no
Barbara can't you see I'm on my knees.

Chorus
I just want to be on television
I could be so real on television
All I know with certainty
Is what I see on my TV

I had a friend who had a friend
Who used to work for CNN
Maybe I could make some kind of news.
Bomb a band, steal a car
I know I wouldn't get too far
But, Barbara, I don't have a thing to lose.

Chorus
I just want to be on television
I could be so real on television
All I know with certainty
Is what I see on my TV

Bridge
All my life I've been a loser
No one ever noticed me
Now I know they couldn't miss me
Big as life on their TV!

I'll change my sex, I'll wear a dress
Just name the crime I will confess
Fifteen minutes fame is all I need.
Mutilation, masturbation,
Or incestuous relations
I won't balk at bestiality

Chorus
I just want to be on television
I could be so real on television
All I know with certainty
Is what I see on my TV
Lately I'm feeling my inner dog.

"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable"

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." Hunter S. Thompson

"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over."

He's a beautiful boy, but he's covered in graffiti
And the grease and the grime
Of living on the streets
That boy has pride
That boy can take a beating
Stands up every time
You knock him off his feet

A beautiful boy, but he's broken inside
More sinned against than sinning,
So misguided
The money's all spent
Takes it all in stride
Needs a few supplies
To make it through the night

(and he must)

"In my opinion this is a bunch of filth and garbage and we need far less this type of lyrics gettin back in the ears of our children." - from a critique received

"When I was 5 years old, my mum always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wante to be when I grew up. I wrote down, "Happy". The told me I didn't understand the assignment and I told them they didn't understand life." John Lennon.
