Sad to see the news that Levon Helm has passed today after a long battle with cancer at 71.
I was a big fan of "The Band" and felt that he was the driving force in that group.

It is kinda funny how critically acclaimed they were by people inside the business, but never really got the big time....broad based recognition that some other artists of that time did.

Backing up Dylan on his first electric tour....and some of their work with Van Morrison
speak to the relationships they forged with the great musicians of that time.

Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Levon Helm.
That was a very talented line up of musicians. Canadians all except Levon.

I will pop in my "Music from Big Pink" c.d. on my drive home and enjoy the ride.
(Showing my age now).
Another great one leaves us....but the music lives on.

I always thought Levon was good. It shocked me when Mark (funk daddy) actually told me on a brief chat that he had died.

I also enjoyed him on The Dollmaker, a movie, with Jane Fonda. He was a good actor as well

I had always wanted to go to one of his "Midnight Rambles" on his farm in Woodstock, NY. Unfortunately, I never did. Levon was a tornado of a talent - in addition to "Dollmaker", he was Loretta Lynn's dad in "Coal Miner's Daughter" and test pilot and Chuck Yeager's wingman Jack Riley in "The Right Stuff".

Yes....He was a natural as Loretta Lynn's father in Coal Miners Daughter.
I had forgotten about The Right Stuff part.

I always loved listening to the vocal harmonies The Band used on their songs.
They all came in at different times, and just seemed to blend some very average voices together
to create a very soulful sound. Wish I could have caught A Midnight Ramble myself.

Think I will pop in The Last Waltz tonight and revisit that great work.

After that long of a battle with cancer, more than once, I'm sure he's much more at peace now :) Making the comeback to sing again after being told he would likely never even talk again was quite inspirational.
