CD Review:
Daring has a nice way with a lyric, and a beautiful sound on a self-titled record that's a bit of a throwback. You can hear the doo-wop Mr. Daring grew up with in Baby Blue, and the echoes of Nelson on songs like Travellin' Man and Only for You. Gorgeous clarinet from Billy Novick on Only for You, and sweet steel guitar on Soldier's Lullaby. 'Dixie Taps' draws from The Band, and 'Funny' has it's own sort of world-weary, Leon Redbone vibe. Mr. Daring's had some good success in showbiz, notably writing and recording songs for various John Sayles' movies, but admits that he 'never could pull the trigger on a collection of my own songs'.
Too bad. With a great band like this, it feels like he should have more of a catalog to draw from. But no matter. If you like your pop mellow and country-tinged, you'll get a kick out of this one. A charming record.
