CD Review: Fused Jazz from Heavy Tin is a revelation. It’s hard to believe that muscular, beefy jazz like this can come from a duo. But BR. Pearson on piano and The incredible Izzy Real on bass serve up a tasty, nutritious dose of steamy, hot (or is it cool?) jazz. From the bop inspired Bug Juice and smoky Bitch me blue, to the spellbinding, Word Spill, Fused Jazz delivers the goods. Produced by Hilton Brye, Fused Jazz is, as the name implies, a mix of styles and genres. I like the bluesy Manhattan Yellow and I can almost hear the Allen Ginsburg or Jack Kerouac poetry when I listen to Circumlocution. Moorpark Rumble is the perfect title for music that sounds like a twisted take on the Jets and Sharks. Jazz fans should give a listen to Fused Jazz. There’s a lot to like here. The musicianship is crisply interesting and innovative. Pearson and Izzy Real hit a groove from the opening cut that never lets up. Fused Jazz flows like a waterfall. Check it out.
