Artist: Joni Laurence
Album: Trashbag Birdie
CD Review:
Joni released this, her 3rd full-length release, and celebrated by quitting her day job to give us folk music from the heart and heartland.
Upon first listen, you'll notice that Joni is very relaxed and not in a hurry to give us anything but herself. This is old-tyme folk complete with old-time lyrics. Many of the songs are very mellow and somber, but not despondent at all. More often, there is a bright hope inside each song.
Her voice is calm & assured, reminiscent of some of the greats like Joni Mitchell & Joan Baez. Her music isn't too adventuresome, but it's telling her stories and reflects them well.
On a couple tracks, Joni pushes the sound ahead, like on Sneak-Up, with it's electrcic guitar solo break. I'd like to hear a bit more like this, if only to mix things up a bit. Same thing with the vocals on Unfinished Business, taking us somewhere new.
There's not much else to say. A new folk songstress to add to your collection, delivering songs in a traditional style, but nicely produced for today. If that's what you're into, you won't be disappointed at all.
