Artist: Doug Folkins Album: “Roots” CD Review:
This CD is an interesting collection of songs given a kind of folk-rock treatment. Think Whiskeytown or Olds 97’s with a little lighter hand.
Folkins’ lyrics are exceptionally interesting and draw you into his engaging almost cinematic stories. Although there are only 6 songs on this CD they are all quite good.
I only have one criticism. Perhaps it is the way the vocals were recorded, but his singing sounds thin and strays a bit out of the lines.
There is very solid songwriting on “Roots”, but it is Ken Hamm’s dobro playing that seals the deal for me. His skillful playing is the perfect compliment to the melodies Folkins has created. Their pairing on this CD makes it all come together and sound great.
