CD REVIEW: Gabe Lee - "Haunted Hollowbody"
By Stacey Board - 11/18/2004 - 02:00 PM EST

Artist: Gabe Lee
Album: Haunted Hollowbody
CD Review: Think Chris Isaak with less warble and more sweat. The sound of this guitar is positively spooky in the very best way. I can see why Lee felt inspired by it.

The next thing I noticed was that Lee's voice also has lots of power and personality. He puts his heart and soul and guts into it. "Hey Mister Driver" sounds something like Tom Waits on his very best vocal day ever, but with that type of spunk and energy.

Other tunes sound more 'lounge', others more torchy and some just plain rock. Lee is a talented songwriter with a nice big toolbox of styles and techniques. Don't let the retro guitar make you assume this is a retro CD. It is clear instead that Lee has absorbed many influences and made his own unique sound.

Get the CD and hear what I mean for yourself.
