CD REVIEW: Cyd Ward – “Between The Lines”
By Stacey Board - 01/18/2003 - 12:53 AM EST

Artist: Cyd Ward
Album: “Between The Lines”
CD Review: The title “Between The Lines” is the title of a song on the record, but there really isn’t any need to strain to read between the lines of the songs on the CD.

Most of the songs are very clear and gentle. The arrangements are sweet and simple. Often there are only a few acoustic guitars well played, and a little bass and backing vocals. Only 4 songs have any percussion.

The title track is one of the stronger songs in my opinion, with the lyrics “Give her my best means I wish I were her… goodbye means I love you”. It’s a sentiment of trying to accept the fact of ‘one that got away’ that I think almost anyone can relate to having felt.

Cyd’s voice is very pure and smooth and sweet also. She’s done a very good job on matching the simple arrangements to the uncomplicated songwriting. There are very solid players on the CD also, with the slide guitar on “Maybe I Will” and the violin on “Sonny’s Dream” both standing out as really nice performances. Cyd is also quite capable on her acoustic throughout the CD.

She gives a thank you to Cosy Sheridan in her liner notes, and I can hear the influence. Fans of Cosy will enjoy this CD. Traditional folk fans will also enjoy it for its uncomplicated storytelling approach to songwriting.
