By Gian Fiero - 10/30/2002 - 12:00 AM EST
Artist: Ramsey
Album: "Da 4 Rilla"
CD Review:
Grade Scale 1 low to 10 high
Genre: Rap Sounds Like: E-40 Technical Grade: 8 Production/Musicianship Grade: 8 Commercial Value: 9 Overall Talent Level: 8 Lyrical Skills: 8 Performance Skill: 8 Best Songs: Do The Damn Thang, Tell Me What You Want, The Virus, Da 4 Rilla, Give It Up, Sometimes Weakness: Lack of diversity in music production CD Review: Only a small minority of rap artists can gracefully walk the tightrope between commercially viable, and street credible rap. Ramsey, who resides in San Diego, California, has effortlessly done so with this 13 song LP that can compete with the top Rap LP's of today.
The monster radio single should be, "Do The Damn Thing," which prominently displays his refined ablility to flow with the best MC's on any coast. The lyric on this LP that succinctly captures his music, his mission, and his mentality appear in the song "Heartless," which really is not a song but more of an extended sonnet that lasts for 2 minutes. The lyric goes: "I love hip-hop but I got to get the money because props, respect, and dat never filled anyones tummy..." Enough said.
Advice: Keep doing "The Damn Thang" the way you are doing it! Incorporate new producers or have your producer (Boogieman) collaborate with other producers in order to fully display your creativity and expand your audience. You are deserving of major success. Some smart industry executive will make you an offer eventually.
