Artist: Band: Garden of Dreams
Album: Sleeping Stars - 3 song sampler
CD Review: G of D is a 5 piece Chicago band with strong ties to the 70s and 80s sounds of rock and punk, and a nice brit pop influence as well. Not sure why I was sent solely a 3 song sampler without lyrics, but alas the disc starts with "2 Beautiful", an uptempo real quick tale with a driving beat and pleasing vocals - "I would love to take you away from it all." It really reminds me a lot of some of the great songs we heard in movie soundtracks from the 80s. Their press notes suggest how great this band is live, and my guess is that they would be just as effervescent and effective as on record. Perhaps even more so. The second song, "Killing Romeo and Juliet", moves at a slower pace and reminds me once again of the 80s. Also has a real ominous keyboard sound that weaves throughout.

No doubt about it, this band really knows how to write a great, hooky song. Kudos as well cause the band knows how to keep it simple. 3 minute songs. I love that. The sound production is so clear and master quality throughout. My favorite song here is the closer, "Words Never Spoken" - the quietest song found here: "I just want to find a way out, just one single easy escape." Overall, this is a wonderful introduction into this Chicago outfit. Two thumbs up for a fine sounding collection of songs.
