CD Review: Helen Slater is perhaps best known for her role in the film, "Supergirl," but she is also a singer/songwriter and an accomplished pianist. Her sophomore CD contains songs that feature sparse, organic arrangements that are heavily influenced by jazz and show tunes.

The vocals on this project are not what's featured; it's her songs and songwriting which offer a multiplicity of licensing options that can be easily adapted for plays and Broadway shows - which are venues that these tunes can thrive in. There are two radio-friendly tracks that caught the attention of my industry ears: The melancholic "Any Day Now" which simultaneously articulates the despondency of a failed relationship and the optimism of finding new love, and the swinging, up-tempo "New York In June," which would also be appropriately placed in the next Woody Allen movie.

You don't need to finish a Crossword puzzle to discover the best use for this project, you just need to finish reading this review.
