CD Review: From various parts of the Bronx and Queens in New York City, come M7 Committee, an ensemble of progressive hip-hop artists that are all grouped together under the Black Eye Records umbrella of acts.

This project contains a tight collection of commercially potent tracks which are designed for radio airplay and street popularity. From the scorching opening track by Triple C, "Pop Off" sets it off in the right direction with the hardcore ryhmes and head-banging beats that you would expect from a crew residing in the mecca of hip-hop. What you may not expect is the musicality and attention to detail in the production. This is not some fly-by-night crew who got together for fun: they are seriously trying to make a run for greener pastures.

Tracks like "Ghetto," performed by Joe Grind, showcase the kind of depth that can carry them there. "Da Body," performed by Ambush, will appeal to those Trina/Lil Kim fans who like the more salacious side of rap. "We Gon' See, " performed by Shawn D'zyn, is the perfect intro to the most commercial track, "No Match," performed by Ambush and featuring Guru. It's the strongest in terms of identity and would translate well on video, as would "Ice Heist," also performed by Ambush.

Most major record labels would push "Friday Night," performed by Bank Stoppaz as a single because of its radio-friendly appeal and prominent sample of the Johnny Kemp hit, "Just Got Paid," but my industry ears perked when I heard Mikey D's "Tappin' Your Girl" which may be the most coherent composition and tightest performance on this project...but would have to be censored tremendously for radio airplay. No problem. This crew is on top of their game: they have an accompanying CD with expurgated radio edits of each song.

Moves like that will take them "out ov tha shadow" and into the spotlight before they know it.

Advice: Market and promote this on both the street and commercial level.
