CD Review: I first listened to Hilsyde, who is a singer/songwriter/musician/producer and LA native as I merged onto Interstate 5 en route to his hometown, and my destination. If I were an A&R rep, I would have driven straight to his house and offered him a development deal after hearing the first track on his CD, the funky a cappella intro which beautifully introduces the up-tempo horn driven first track, "Dance Tonight."
Hilsyde, who is of Latin decent, but grew up in a black neighborhood and was raised on Soul music. That's obvious in the aggressive approach he takes toward performing his songs as he often pushes his edgy tenor (and sometimes falsetto) voice to the limit, managing to push your interest to new heights in the process.
While the production of this project owes its uniqueness to the blistering horn arrangements, its Hilsyde's attitude that brings it all together with minimal hip-hop bravado and maximum r&b dedication. No where on this project is that more evident than on what should be the lead single, "Just Do," which can also be used as the universal theme song for most of the artists that I review.
He sings in Verse 1:
For days and years I've been working on my craft...things is getting hard...working that ass, working everyday and trying to do what I'm doing...this so hard, this music thing that I'm pursuing...Is it gonna work out? Is it gonna be alright? And everyday that I'm sitting here, I be wondering, wondering, why? God blessed me and he blessed me everyday... with the genius and the passion and the love for this game...and I say...
Everything is gonna be o.k...one day you're gonna get your way, don't stress now, you won't last, you'll be consumed just do what you do....
Advice: Just do what you do...
