CD REVIEW: Kathryn Priestley – “Travel On”
By Stacey Board - 10/30/2004 - 05:30 PM EDT

Artist: Kathryn Priestley
Album: “Travel On”
CD Review: Travel On is as fine a collection of songs as I have heard all year. Priestley’s voice is a fine thread weaving its way through the tapestry of words and accompanying players in each song.

The songs sound pleasingly familiar to the ear - as if you’ve known them all your life. But Priestly stays clear of clichés and predictable lines both lyrical and melodic. Sometimes soft, sometimes muscular, her songs are always well crafted and performed.

The players and arrangements beautifully enhance the mood of each song. They use an appropriately light hand on the arrangements and the best in recording quality. Priestley’s vocals at times remind me of the earthy richness of Tracy Chapman, at other times the mercurial smooth flow of older Joni Mitchell. Her sound ultimately though is her own.

Fans of thoughtful seasoned songwriting will enjoy every bit of Kathryn Priestley’s “Travel On”.
