CD REVIEW: Mizar – “The King of The Stars”
By Stacey Board - 06/23/2004 - 11:26 PM EDT

Artist: Mizar
Album: “The King of The Stars”
CD Review: I think when the title was supposed to be “King of Out There” and somehow it was mistranslated.

Mizar’s music sounds like a cross between a scary amusement ride soundtrack and a propoganda film from a former soviet country. Like watching aliens land, you are curious, frightened and fascinated at the same time.

The vocals are completely in the right channel, and I do mean opposite of left here, the right channel. The vocals are warbly and spooky, leaning sometimes into a carnival tinged bad dream. He sings in an accent reminiscent of Boris Karloff. Of course when he goes to his falsetto the accent isn’t as noticeable. If that isn’t enough to separate him from the pack, he makes occasional surprising and admittedly unsettling popping/clicking sounds with his throat and mouth while singing.

Meanwhile, swirling totally from the left channel are various sounds coming from his keyboard, an entire orchestra for his off-center musical drama.

I can see the comparison to Andy Kaufman who is referenced in his bio. Mizar is is either a genius beyond the understanding of most people, or he’s a troubling man you shouldn’t encourage. Or both. It is inevitable that some won’t understand and may laugh. But he may be having the best laugh of all on all reviewers trying to review him.

Regardless of whether you like it or not, you are most certainly left with an impression. Isn’t that what all musicians want?

If you are ready to prove your musical open mindedness your challenge is here: “The King of The Stars” by Mizar.
