Artist: elaine k Album: “as is” CD Review:
The first thing I noticed on this CD was an influence of Ani in elaine k’s songwriting approach and delivery. There is a less intense touch but it contains the same type of sincere energy and emotion. She even uses a similar singing style and cadence.
My only personal bone to pick is with the effect used on some of Elaine’s vocals. The flangy effect on some of the songs personally turns me off. I very much prefer the ones that don’t use it and it's much easier to appreciate her lovely singing on those without it.
Elaine k definitely has a way with melody and poetic turn of a phrase. The songs are all pleasing and engaging. Her songs can be growly and gritty and then they float along loftily, then turn soulful and jazzy.
The players she has on the record are top quality and enhance each song without ever overwhelming her song. The vocals and story of the song are out front where they should be.
Fans of Ani Difranco will very likely appreciate this well written and performed CD.
