Artist: Nick McAlister Album: “bout time!” CD Review:
Nick McAlister is a fairly rare musical creature. He is a bass player that is also a songwriter and singer. And he does quite a good job at both. This is some very fine guitar rock.
“bout time” is perhaps his own joke on himself about how long it has taken him to put together his own CD. He seems to have been very busy as a bass player, listing work he has done on 7 other CD’s in the liner notes.
The players he has assembled for his CD are great, all the way through to the great backup vocals. McAlister’s producer, co-writer and guiarist, Donny Holcombe, especially deserves some props on all of his contributions. His ear as producer is spot on, his playing is great and my favorite songs on the CD turned out to be the ones he and McAlister wrote together.
McAlister’s musical style ranges from pop, rock, swing, bluesy ska all the way to a jazzy feel on “Take Me Away”. I appreciate the versatility in his writing and playing style. McAlister is definitely a talented songwriter and singer and this is a very enjoyable CD.
