Artist: Mike Longo Trio Album: The Detroit International Jazz Festival CD Review:
What happens when a man has performed 22 years with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and releases 17 albums under his own name? You listen to him. This pianist speaks with authority. His latest – well the title says it all. Naturally a guy who was a part of the classics Plays the classics:
Song List 1. Introduction 2. My Funny Valentine 3. Band Introduction 4. Trane's Blues 5. Intro To Fiesta Mojo 6. Fiesta Mojo 7. Audience Response 8. Rhythm-A-Ning 9. Intro To Tin Tin Deo 10. Tin Tin Deo 11. Intro To Porgy And Bess 12. Porgy And Bess Medley 13. Audience Reaction 14. Footprints 15. Audience Reaction 16. Round Midnight 17. Night In Tunisia, A 18. Closing Remarks
And all that’s needed is
Mike Longo (piano) Santi Debriano (bass) Ray Mosca (drums)
Suffice it to say, this is one of the more bubbly yet intimate live albums now on the market. Except for the brief song intros by the man himself, there’s not much about this that reeks live. Yes, the energy is there. But one has a feeling that that can be said about any arrangement Mike touches. This album is standard instrumentalists’ delight.
