CD Review: The main thing the Kicks need to do is to stop pretending they don't take themselves seriously. When all is said and done, they're a fairly talented band with good songwriting skills, but their late 90s grunge sound probably isn't the best format for them.

Hailing from Massachusetts, the Kicks have catchy songs with some interesting chord progressions. It's pure, proud pop, unashamed of what it is, and it's enjoyable. It is not all that distinguishable, however, from thousands of other bands out there. They are tighter than most bands and perhaps have listened to the odd Ramones or Clash song in addition to the Offspring, 3 Doors Down and Creed. They are also a young band, and in time will probably develop a more original sound that might get them places.

"Banana Seat" is a particularly promising track, a catchy song that evokes the feel of late 60s bubblegum pop. But at times, the band appears to be too busy making sure they are noticed when they should just be "kicking" (pardon the pun) back and having fun. You're young, guys, you don't have to be REM. Go get laid or something.
