CD REVIEW: The Yardbirds – Birdland
By Ben Ohmart - 01/28/2003 - 08:38 PM EST
Artist: The Yardbirds
Album: Birdland
CD Review:
This is an album – a new album – the first new album from the Yardbirds since 1968 – slated to hit the streets in April of this year (2003). It’s not their Newest album, though, which just came out. Instead, Birdland hovers somewhere between a tribute album and a family reunion with founding members Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty. To fill out the group – well, you won’t believe it. Here goes:
Jeff Beck Brian May Steve Vai Slash Joe Satriani Johnny Rzeznik Steve Lukather Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter
Of course they don’t play on ‘em all, but these classic guitar guests beat the hell out of some hit tunes from the 60’s, & more.
I’m Not Talking Crying Out For Love The Nazz Are Blue For Your Love Please Don’t Tell Me ‘Bout the News Train Kept a Rolling Mr. Saboteur Shapes of Things My Blind Life Over, Under, Sideways, Down Mr. You’re a Better Man Than I Mystery of Being Dream Within a Dream Happenings Ten Years Time Ago An Original Man
‘For Your Love’ is the best, and just how you remember it. For prog fans, go straight to the best guitarist ever (Brian May) and listen to his perfect rendition of ‘Mr. You’re a Better Man Than I.’ Then pitch over to Jeff Beck feeling expertly around ‘My Blind Life.’
There’s a reason everyone knows this band. The tunes, baby. And they’ve come back for another hour, just to please YOU.
