Artist: Alex Lloyd Album: “Watching Angels Mend” CD Review:
I really loved every track on this CD. Fans of Remy Zero (me! me!) will fall in love at first song. Subtle and beautiful sonic touches abound.
The liner notes indicate that A. Wasiliev wrote all the songs, except one where the credit is shared with Stuart Miller. Fear NOT! A. Wasiliev and Alex are the same person. I will also point out that Alex is given credit for playing several instruments on several of the tracks, including vocals, guitar, keys, and bass. I’m not implying he’s any bit the slacker with all of his obvious talent and input, I’m just somehow bummed that he’s not also the writer.
“Watching Angels Mend” is a very sophisticated treatment of some seriously compelling pop songs. Alex and his co-producer Magnus Fiennes create a complete sonic mood while they paint a picture for you. This CD gives me what I like the best in lyric pictures; surprising me with different presentations of ideas and emotions while simultaneously not becoming pretentious. They’ve wrapped it up in some sweeping arrangements that are constantly changing and moving you from one point to the next. Just gorgeous.
