Artist: Band: Sunset Room Album: Almost An Angel CD Review:
There are a lot of things I find interesting about this record. I really love the mix of electronica and retro. This record calls to mind what might have happened if Moby and Nina Simone had a love child. Remember the movie Bladerunner? Remember how the futuristic ‘replicant’ character dressed and styled her hair like the 1940’s? She belongs in this band.
I love that it's unpredictable and unexpected lyrically and musically. “Nice to Meet You” is a stand-out track for me, a nice dark lurking groove with enjoyable twists and turns. They set a great mood here. It's also Catie Moore’s best vocal performance in my book; the most passionate and varied from kittenish coo to power belt. College radio should eat this up with a spoon.
The songwriting team here really seems to have found a sophisticated palatte to draw from and that keeps it interesting. If you like music that creates a great mood and still surprises you, you’ll enjoy this record.
